Welcome to the EIS FIFE Local Association

History of Fife Local Association of the EIS

1. A short history of the Local Association

Fife Local Association dates from 1972 when the present structure was set up with three main districts - North East Fife, Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline. Each district covers all the schools in the area.

There are currently 19 Secondary and 142 Primary schools in Fife plus special units and free standing nurseries. These are the figures for January 2008.

The majority of teachers in these schools are EIS members.

Directors of Education in Fife since 1919

Not all members of the EIS although some were! It is interesting to see who was "in charge" during the different eras. Notice the long terms of service for some of them! Since 1972 there have been 6 incumbents. From 2007 the title became Executive Director (Education).

1919 – 41 – Gregor McGregor

1941 – 44 – Robert Hay

1944 – 66 – Douglas M McIntosh

1966 – 85 – Ian S Flett

1985 – 92 – Magnus More

1992 – 95 – Brian Welsh
