PROBATIONERS

Probationer Mentoring Time

The GTC Guidelines give this in terms of full time equivalent. Class Contact Time is 0.7FTE, CPD is 0.3FTE and Support is 0.1FTE

Class Contact Time should include any registration class time if a probationer chooses to undertake such a task.

Support works out as roughly 2.4 periods. Our understanding is that this would be interpreted as 3 periods in Fife schools – an understanding which is shared with Ken Greer, Executive Director (Education). At the Joint Consultative Group of 13^th November 2007 he indicated that probationers should be getting 3 mentoring/support periods a week. In practice, the third of these periods might be used in a more flexible manner within a school since other staff might be involved in probationer support and a fixed period would not facilitate this.

This support is in addition to the inset days for probationers but if such a day fell at a time when a mentoring period was due we would consider that this would be in lieu of that period.

There is no formal Fife Policy covering Probationers so the GTC guidance is the main source of information.

Remember that, although your initial membership of the EIS is free, you still have to register again with HQ at Moray Place, Edinburgh at the end of that time.

This does not happen automatically so don’t forget !
